"Cyber Bullying" Update
I think it is timely to remind you of comments I made in the February 2010 newsletter.
There have been a small, but increasing number of issues this term with both mobile phone and internet abuse between pupils - this is "cyber-bullying" and as a School we do take this very seriously, as we would any kind of bullying. This "cyber bullying" invariably takes place outside school and we cannot police cyberspace, even if we would wish to. Like many things, education about safe internet use is paramount and we can only do our small part in this. We ask you as parents to reinforce the issues here, especially with the safe use of the internet.
The growing use of social networking sites such as "Facebook" is particularly causing us problems as it is all too easy to direct abuse at other people, using these sites, and/or to post inappropriate material. We will be working with both the police and the network providers in cases where individuals or the School are brought into disrepute via these websites. "Facebook" cannot be accessed at School because of our filters and I am afraid that the onus is on you as parents to monitor what your children are doing. We ask you to do so. Where we discover cases of cyber bullying or sites which bring the school or individuals into disrepute we will take whatever action is appropriate and provide you as parents with evidence of where your children have ben involved. You may not be aware, also, of the inappropriate language used habitually on these sites, something else worth talking to your children about.

Specialism Update Easter 2010
Welcome to our revamped Specialism Update. In order to rationalise the cycle of the school’s publications we have decided to produce only one Specialism Update every year covering the specialism activities up to the end of the spring term, with a Focus on Five Ways issued at the end of the autumn and summer terms.
Travel Update on Staff Trapped Abroad
Many of you, but especially parents of Year 7 pupils will be aware that for much of the week we have had ten teaching staff trapped in various parts of the world. Year 7 parents will know that sadly, after considering all of the options, we had no alternative, but to ask them “to work from home” for the remainder of this week.
I write to inform you that we are assuming that all staff will return to the UK by Monday 26th April. Whatever the consequences in terms of staffing from Monday 26th April, I am pleased to inform you that normal service will be resumed and that all pupils in all Year groups will be required in school.
I appreciate that for Year 7 parents, in particular, this week has been very problematic and I thank them for their forbearance and understanding. I assume that this unique situation will never happen again! HM.
Escape Rock Climbing Free Trip
FREE YEAR 7 OUTDOOR ROCK CLIMBING TRIP - Over the next month there will be two opportunities for members of the Year 7 climbing clubs to go rock climbing in Mid Wales. The Prince's Teaching Institute Mark to History and Science
For three years the History and Science Department at Five Ways have been working with The Prince's Teaching Institute, a body founded by The Prince of Wales with the aim of bringing excitement and rigour back to subjects taught in Schools. Mr Farr has been heavily involved from the start and, more recently, Mr Drury. To acknowledge our involvement, the Headmaster attended a reception in November at Clarence House and was presented by The Prince of Wales with the PTI Charter Mark for History and Science. English and Geography are now also involved and should receive their own Charter Mark in due course.
International School Award (Redesignation)
Five Ways continues to provide a huge range of opportunities for staff and students to get involved in international activity, ranging this term from curriculum linked visits to Iceland, Italy and the World War One battlefields, to the exchange visit to China in October. The Headmaster, with Mr Bartlam and Chair of Governors Mrs Jarratt, paid a visit to Babati, Tanzania, in November, with the aim of redefining our link with the town. We also welcomed a small group of two pupils and the Principal, Mrs Sharma, from our partner school in India. The pupils spent time in lessons, and Mrs Sharma exchanged ideas on the management and Leadership of Schools with senior staff, as well as observing school life.

Recycling
A purpose built recycling site is to be created here at KEFW. This combined with a link up with Smurfit Kappa and Birmingham City Council will help make our recycling initiatives a reality. The idea is to start with paper and then move onto recycling plastic. In this way we will be doing our bit to combat Global Warming as a school community.
